Statement and Assumptions Questions Set-2

1)Statement: If you have any problems, consult the teacher.

Assumptions:

  1. You have some problems.
  2. The teacher can solve any problem.
  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 4

Explanation : The word ‘if’ indicates that the ‘you’ does not necessarily have problems but in case he has any, he can consult the teacher. so, I is not implicit. Assumption II is not implicit because the statement does not tell us anywhere that any problem can be solved by the teacher, it merely asks to consult the teacher in case there is one. so, assumption II is not implicit. Thus,  Neither assumption I nor II is implicit.

2)Statement: "You are hereby appointed as a programmer with a probation period of one year and your performance will be reviewed at the end of the period for confirmation." - A line in an appointment letter.

Assumptions:

  1. The performance of an individual generally is not known at the time of appointment offer.
  2. Generally an individual tries to prove his worth in the probation period.

  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 5

Explanation : The performance of the individual has to be tested over a span of time as the statement mentions. So, I is implicit. The statement mentions that the individual's worth shall be reviewed before confirmation. So, II is also implicit

3)Statement: Please do not use lift while going down - an instruction on the top floor of a five-storey building.

Assumptions:

  1. While going down, the lift is unable to carry any load.
  2. Provision of lift is a matter of facility and not of right.

  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 2

Explanation :The statement requests people not to use lift while moving down. This implies that the lift may be used to move up and the request has been made so that more people can use the lift for ascending which would otherwise cause more physical stress than going down the stairs. So, only II is implicit.

4)Statement: A pen is more powerful than the sword.

Assumptions:

  1. Pen is made of metal which is harder than the metal used for making the sword.
  2. Mental power is more effective than the physical power.

  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 2

Explanation : Here, the direct meaning must not be taken. It is assumed that mental power is more effective to physical power and these are compared to the pen and sword respectively because the pen is a tool to write down powerful ideas whereas the sword is a tool to show your physical power.

5) Statement: Every person seeking tickets will be given only 5 tickets for the match.

Assumptions:

  1. The organizers do not want to sell tickets.
  2. No one wants more than 5 tickets.

  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 4

Explanation : We can assume that this policy has been implemented due to greater demand. The statement doesn’t make it seem that organizers don’t want to sell tickets. Also, there would have been no need to make the given rule had people not wanted more than 5 tickets. Hence neither I nor II are implicit assumptions.

6) Statements: Love marriages mostly end in divorce

 Assumptions:

  1. There are cases of divorce.
  2. Love marriages do take place
  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer: option 5

Explanation : It is very clear from the statements that divorce take place when love marriage takes hence, both are follow.

7)Statement: we must be prepared to face any eventually and all the assignments must be completed as per their schedule-Director told the faculty members.

Assumptions:

  1. There is a possibility of any serious eventuality.
  2.  Dates are fixed for all the assignments.
  3.  Faculty members are supposed to complete all assignments.

  1. All
  2. Only II and III
  3. None
  4. Only III
  5. Only I

Answer : option 1

Explanation : All three statements are implicit in nature.

8)Statement: “To stop train pull chain. Penalty for use without reasonable and sufficient cause is fine upto Rs. 1,000 and / or imprisonment upto one year.”

Assumptions:

  1. A few persons are naughty.
  2. People travelling in the train want to stop the running train in case of emergency.

  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option 5

Explanation : Let us consider the first statement. In the sentence it is given that ‘use without reasonable and sufficient cause’. This indicates that it is implied that some ‘people are naughty’ and these people pull the chain without sufficient cause. Also, the chain is meant for stopping the train in case of an emergency so it is assumed that everyone would ‘want’ to stop the train in case of emergency.

9)Statement: Should all mig-21 fighters be banned owing to frequent accidents of this aircraft?

 Arguments:

  1. Yes, it has become flying coffin.
  2. No, almost all the accidents were due to human error.

  1.  If only argument I is “strong”.
  2.  If only argument II is “strong”.
  3.  If either I or II is “strong”.
  4.  If neither I nor II is “strong”.
  5.  If both I and II are “strong”.

 Answer : option 2

Explanation : Argument I lacks substance and is hence weak. That it is a “flying coffin” is evident from the statement itself. II is strong because it makes no sense to ban the aircraft when the responsibility lies somewhere else.

10)Statement: Government has permitted unaided colleges to increase their fees.

Assumptions:

  1. Unaided colleges are in financial difficulties.
  2. Aided colleges do not need to increase fees.
  1. If only assumption 1 is implicit .
  2. If only assumption 2 is implicit .
  3. If either 1 or 2 is implicit .
  4. If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  5. If both 1 and 2 are implicit .

Answer : option A

Explanation ; Unaided colleges have been allowed to increase their fees. This means that they are in financial difficulties. So, I is implicit. Nothing is mentioned about the aided colleges. So, II is not implicit.
